Challenges and solutions in custom parts procurement
In a world where flexibility and innovation are paramount, the demand for custom parts is high. Whether for mass production or prototypes, manufacturers turn to suppliers to make those designs physical parts. During the procurement process, however, there are always multiple challenges that affect your final product and usually end up with higher prices and a longer-than-expected lead time.
From the initial prototype to the final product, the journey of obtaining custom parts is full of challenges. Batchforce looks at how these obstacles can affect your projects, schedules and overall satisfaction.
Why are custom parts more complicated?
1. Technical complexity
Aligning the raw material, primary manufacturing processes and secondary processes to come together is difficult. Clear communication between the manufacturer and suppliers is needed, in addition to a common understanding of the steps each supplier must perform.
2. Limited vendor options.
If you design a custom part, it usually means that no one has ever manufactured it. You should always try to find a supplier with experience, but sometimes you can’t account for certain problems that arise during manufacturing.
3. Longer lead times
Often suppliers think the part is simple. While this is sometimes true, other times they are wrong and did not foresee certain problems during manufacturing. This leads to increased lead time and cost.
In addition, a custom-made part often has multiple processes. These processes include raw material procurement, primary manufacturing steps such as CNC, 3D printing, laser cutting, stamping, and so on, and secondary processes. These sec
4. Higher costs
Prices for an off-the-shelf part are usually consistent. Yes, we had price inflation during COVID. But usually you can rely on these costs. You can buy it for a prototype and not expect the cost to increase when you buy it in mass production.
Custom parts are a little more difficult, and the quotes you receive from suppliers during development may not be the same price you end up paying.
5. Lack of clear communication and transparency
Custom parts are constantly changing. It is not enough to transmit the product data to procurement once. For each change, the product data along with all requirements must be resent to the procurement team.
Often, after placing an order for a custom part, you don’t have real-time updates on where your supplier is in the process. For example, suppliers are usually not proactive about whether the part is sent out for anodizing, or whether they are checking quality, and so on.
