5 reasons to choose CNC machining for rapid prototyping

CNC machining is a great choice for rapid prototyping. Discover the benefits of using automated equipment for rapid prototyping, creating engineering models and producing high-quality end-use parts. Batchforce gives you five reasons why CNC machining should be your choice for your next rapid prototyping project.

1. CNC machining is fast

The origins of CNC machining for mass production lie in the 1970s. As machines and software applications improved, it is now one of the fastest and most reliable ways to make complex shapes in metal and rigid plastics.

This speed applies to both setup and processing time. First, modern CAD/CAM design software allows a three-dimensional part to be converted into a G-code cutting program and then transferred to a multi-axis milling machine within hours.

Once programmed, a good milling machine or lathe can cut through steel or aluminum with amazing speed, turning a raw metal blank into a finished part in minutes.

2. CNC machining does not require fixed tools

Unlike processes such as plastic injection molding or pressure casting, which use rigid dies made of hardened or semi-hardened steel alloys, CNC machining eliminates the need for these tools, saving valuable time. The only tools used for CNC milling and turning are the hardened metal cutting inserts in the spindles.

Different shapes and types of cutting inserts perform different cutting functions on the workpiece, but when properly arranged on an automatic rotary table, these tools can be changed in seconds.

3. CNC machining is precise

There is no conventional way to achieve higher levels of accuracy and precision than with computer-controlled cutting tools. This level of accuracy routinely produces tolerances of +0.05 mm or 50 microns. This is more than accurate enough for the vast majority of commercial applications. And this is a repeatable tolerance, easily achieved time after time, over production runs of unlimited part numbers.

Smaller tolerances than these, as required for very demanding aerospace, automotive or scientific applications, can be achieved with special cutting tools under controlled conditions.

4. CNC machining is easy to customize

It is easy to make changes to a design very quickly by simply modifying a few lines of the G-code program. This is especially attractive for prototyping, where you have the opportunity to test several iterations and immediately assess the results. Modifying a program and making refined changes during the process can significantly reduce the overall product lead time without adding additional costs.

5. CNC machining can be done with different materials

CNC machines are indifferent to what they cut, as long as the material is stiff enough not to deform or melt under the pressure. This helps in product development or when you want to create different prototypes with slightly different mechanical or cosmetic properties. For example, the same design can be made in rigid plastic, aluminum or steel with only minimal adjustments to the speed and feed of the tool doing the cutting.
